Wednesday was back to work at the capitol. Not a whole lot happened Wednesday. Very few committees met. However I had a meeting in the Sub Committee of the Pension and Benefits committee. We are studying the current law and regulations having to do with working after retirement and the effects on KPERS. Currently if a teacher for instance goes back to work after retiring and works for a different district than they retired from they will have to contributed 22% to KPERS and they do not receive any additional benefit. The contribution can be made by the employer, or the employee or a combination. It depends on your negotiating ability. If they went to work for the same district they would be limited in how much they can make by a salary cap of $20,000. They question is why would you limit their salary or make them contribute to KPERS if they cannot increase there retirement benefit. We will be looking at this issue and see what comes out of it. Happy Thursday from Topeka.
