Tuesday brought the first full day of the legislative session. Wow, talk about busy. I was at my office at 7 am and started getting my office picked up and put together. I met my assistant Heather Watson. She is nice young lady and come to find out I walked with her door to door when we were helping Sen. Mike Petersen during the campaign. She is from Lawrence. At 8 am we had presentations from the Governor and all of his cabinet Secretaries. It was nice getting to put a name with a face. At 10 am I had my first Committee meeting Children and Seniors. At lunch we had our first Freshman Republican Caucus meeting and will be selecting a leader of the caucus in a week. There is no such thing as just lunch, most lunches are working lunches. The Asst. Majority Leader David Crum is the member of the house leadership that helps us assimilate into the House. Did I mention emails. It is unbelievable the amount of emails we get. I am working on responding to the emails. But, it is nice to know that constituents are paying attention to what is happening. I have never had a time in my working career that on my calendar most every minute of the day is taken up. I am getting use to that. The highlight of the day was Gov. Sam Brownback State of the State address. If you have seen the State of the Union on TV, the State of the State is pretty much the same. It was a really neat experience. All the formalities make it special. I invited Sen. Donovan to set with me. It was an honor to be able to do that. Happy Wednesday from Topeka.
