Tonight is my first segment on Renewable Energy. First I want to say that I believe that renewable energy should stand on its own. The state needs to get out of the business of providing subsidies to any industry. If it were not for subsidies the wind industry would not be where it is today. Why is that? Well, it is because it costs more to produce wind energy than it does to produce electricity using natural gas. So, if it is a great deal then let the companies produce as much as the consumer will buy, let's just not give any subsidies for electricity produced by wind or any renewable energy.
In 2009, then Kansas Gov. Mark Parkinson signed into law Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS). It also prescribed a timetable for implementation. The Standard requires 10% of electricity from renewable energy source from 2011 to 2015, then 15% from 2016 to 2020 and finally 20% from 2020 and beyond. So, what will the cost be for electricity produced by wind energy? The following is from the Kansas Policy Institute.
1. The RPS law will raise the cost of electricity by $644 million for the state consumers through 2020. 2. Kansas' electricity price will rise 45% by 2020. 3. The increased energy prices will hurt Kansas' house-holds and business. 4. Lower employment by and average of 12,110 jobs due to the prices. 5. Reduce real disposable income by $1.48 billion. 6. Decrease investment by $191 million. 7. Increase the average household electricity bill by $660 per year.
As you can see so far renewable energy is not a good deal. I will continue with more tomorrow evening.
